The Enemy, Tormentor of Mankind
The Enemy is the figure that people blame when terrible things happen and there is no other explanation. In the early days of Lord Renin, he and the other Hireos and nobles would utter ill words towards The Enemy when someone was attacked by any monster or similar. This soon spread to the people, and it is now common knowledge that The Enemy causes bad things to happen. This said, many people take it to the extreme. If a plant in their garden dies they blame The Enemy, as an example.
The Enemy's Identity
The fact that the Hireos humans used to speak of The Enemy is proof enough for most that The Enemy exists, but some people argue against it, or say that such a figure has a true name and that the true name should be used instead. Many scholars believe that The Enemy is Votorimin, simply because of what the Dutri says in verse 12:
"And so Garuukhavahriehs reached into the abyss of none and pulled forth gleaming claws of black and a crest of blood feathers and eyes darker than shadow, and as this twisted figure set foot on the black marble it was named Vetorimin, who was to be the enemy of all mortals."
This is solid evidence if the Dutri is to be taken word-for-word, but others argue that this is not good enough, and that it's a simple coincidence that Nikina chose to call Votorimin "the enemy" when the Hireos humans already had already spoken of The Enemy long before. Many more say that if Nikina thought that "the enemy of all mortals" was a suitable title for Votorimin, then that is what Nikina would call him. It does not mean that the two titles are connected by any means. The Order of Dualkedor tries to establish that Votorimin and The Enemy are the same being. Many large arguments of this nature have arisen in religious and scientific areas of Riiga. A select few believe that The Enemy is simply another name for Garukavar himself, because nobody likes to speak his name aloud.
However, there are differences between The Enemy and Garukavar that the Order of Dualkedor establish as divine law:
| Garukavar |
The Enemy/Votorimin |
| Is not wholly malicious. |
Is wholly malicious. |
| Is part of Forganad, thus, essential |
Is not part of Forganad |
| Creates monsters |
Does not create monsters |
| Does not command monsters |
Commands all monsters |
Nikina does not speak of The Enemy if questioned about it, and those who initially used the term are gone, so there are none to ask.
His Monsters
Though Garukavar creates monsters, The Enemy commands them. Orders such as the Legionites, Paladins, and the Order of Dualkedor make effort to learn about monsters (the difference between monsters and animals being that animals have their own place in the natural world). There are four commonly known monsters, all listed below.
However, the Dutri clearly describes more than just these five species. Verse 13 of the Dutri describes seven types of beasts: wolf people (folang), horned beasts of air (uniphon), axe giants (giakdon), winged lions (chimakor); and the other three; stone-jawed lizards, wind giants of the sky, and magicians of none. After Murluron appeared as a giant black whale during The Darkness, many believed that he was the wind giant of the sky that the Dutri referred to, and that there may well be more like him. Others said that this is impossible, because Murluron was an Odanon and not a monster, but the description is, nevertheless, eerily similar. The majority believe that Wind Giants are the beasts referred to as Orkatang by the royal Hireos. There are no records of monster sightings matching the description of "stone-jaw lizards" or "magicians of none". The Order of Dualkedor believes that Garukavar and The Enemy are hiding these monsters until the time of the next Darkness.
