Horned Carnivores

Behemoth

One of the largest and most mysterious animals in Riiga, Behemoth -- originally spelled biheamohhk -- is rarely seen and rarely spoken of. They are considered the greatest creations of Nikina -- as opposed to a mundane animal, ie; a creature created by Ilertav. The only reports of sightings of Behemoth are vague and broken, as they only appeared during very troubled moments and when the sky was dark or when a storm raged overhead. In Hunnuklad, there are scriptures that were there before humans arrived, and upon translating them, priests and scholars found that within them they described creatures called Behemoth (The actual spelling was originally translated as Biheamohhk). The scriptures roughly states as follows:

"Behemoth, children of the beast king, equal only to the mountain and to the sea and to the sky where they dwell. Like cows and bulls they feast on the vast fields, and like great Stone-Jaw they feed on the earth's dark shell. Hunters cannot approach them, for they know the Other, and they can move without moving. They cannot be tamed, for the sea and the mountains and the skies do whatever they will. Their hearts are of hope, as they are the greatest of the land, and they withstand the mortal edge. Their eyes flare like the moon at night and they can speak to the core with their voices. They wear crowns of horns that shimmer with the light of the suns. Against their bodies swords are shattered and axes go blunt and spears snap and arrows are like raindrops."

Many people believe that Behemoth are closely connected with Ilertav, as their descriptions are quite similar and have an epic quality. Behemoth have been described as great lions, as bulls, as flying beasts, as giant reptiles, and as many other things but their most common appearance is most like no other animal; "with the build of a crocodile, head of a boar, and flesh of a hippopotamus, they walk like heavy bears," as quoted by Renin.
