King Gabriel Idavio
In the early days of Lyte, there was a war between the first humans and the Giakdon. Lord Renin was leading the humans and Karomaroc was leading the Giakdon. At least, that is how the story is mostly told, but few know of the influence of Veriviet GvoranShun in this war. Veriviet once joined Karomaroc's Giakdon in a march against the city. He encountered Renin and they fought. Veriviet overwhelmed Renin with bizarre magic and attacks as powerful as a siege ram, but retreated when one of Renin's Archmarnes came to his aid. This encounter with Veriviet, however, is not recalled by most; more people prefer to tell of how Renin defeated Karomaroc rather than how Renin almost died at the hands of Veriviet. Even less commonly known is how -- in 8550BD, when Renin struck his blade through the eye hole of Karomaroc's helmet, snapping his blade and forcing Karomaroc to tumble backwards into the abyss -- Veriviet was watching from nearby. Unlike Karomaroc, he could see the power of Renin's sword and he fled deeper into the caves as Karomaroc was being slain. Garukavar was disappointed in Veriviet, and Garukavar turned turned Veriviet's bones to a single piece of metal, paralysing the Xelevikenar yet keeping him alive. So Veriviet lay deep in these caves, unable to move or die, simply waiting.
Discovery of the Islands
In 7996BD, humans had begun to set out sailing the world, as they felt secure enough in their own homeland and were not afraid to leave into the mysterious lands beyond. One of the first and greatest explorers was a man known as Gabriel Idavio, a designer of ships and a skilled sailor. Where most sailed west and then north, eventually discovering Huirnon, Idavio sailed southeast and found a great island which he promptly named after himself. Such was Idavio's ego that he considered himself, not a sailor or an adventurer, but a king. So he named the it King Idavio Island. But at this time, he was unaware of what secrets the island held. Upon exploration, he and his team discovered that their was a massive structure in the centre that appeared as a sheer rise of land. In time, they learned that the structure was actually a giant prison, built countless years ago with technology beyond their understanding. Idavio and his men sheltered in the prison and found food and water on the island, and they spent some years within the stone walls, learning and studying the workings of the building.
Idavio and his men taught themselves to lock and unlock all the different kinds of cells and doors, and they then walled off the control rooms and left secret passages as the only ways to reach the controls. Being a very cunning character, Idavio claimed the prison as his own, named it Mentiritis and had word sent back to Lyte. Idavio offered to take any dangerous criminals and lock them away. Idavio also guaranteed that nothing would be able to escape his prison. And so he received criminals by the shipload and with them came payment and some more guards for his services. Though many of the new guards tried to learn the workings of the prison, only Idavio and his few dozen men knew where the passages were and how to use the controls. For some time, the prison held only humans, but eventually that all changed.
In 7844BD, miners found Veriviet's paralysed body deep in the caves near Xunder. They sent a message to Lord Renin who promptly went to the place in person. Veriviet, though unable to move, intimidated all who went near him; they were afraid that his inability to move was a trick. Renin, however, was fearless, and he had Veriviet bound in rope and chains and sent in their largest ship to Mentiritis where Idavio promptly locked the monster away in the best chamber he had. Veriviet's sword, Miesich, was given to Idavio as payment for containing the monster.
The Rise of King Idavio
What happened thereafter is somewhat unclear, as this portion of history is recollected from stories told by those related to Idavio's men who helped run the prison. Mentiritis ran smoothly for a few years after Veriviet was imprisoned there. A few very dangerous and rare monsters were sent over these years - the likes of which are now unknown to this day. As the stories go, Gabriel began talking to himself. They would overhear him mumbling about gaining the knowledge to become immortal. He would speak as though in a conversation with a voice only heard by him. As Veriviet is a being of knowledge, they assumed that Veriviet was tempting Gabriel with divine knowledge in exchange for something. Second in charge of Mentiritis, Alix Tuchisik, took it upon himself to steal the key to Veriviet's cell and hide it from Gabriel. The plan didn't quite work, as somehow Gabriel knew that they were going to steal it, and he caught them in the act. Harsh words and uncharacteristically violent threats resulted in a battle of swords, and Gabriel escaped with several minor wounds. They say he retreated through secret doors unknown even to any of them, and he hid within the inner mechanical corridors of the prison. Though they did not see him again, many of them would still hear a voice at night mumbling on the other side of the wall, talking about acquiring knowledge.
It wasn't until Alix closed the nearby docks down and gathered the men together that they realised what Gabriel would give to Veriviet in exchange for knowledge. By the time they discovered where Gabriel hid Miesich - Veriviet's sword - they found that it was not in its sheath. Sorely concerned, they went to inspect Veriviet's cell and found that it was sealed by means they did not understand, and they had no way of knowing if it was empty. Fearing for their lives at the prospect of a Xelevikenar running loose through Mentiritis, they evacuated, leaving all within and activating every security measure they could find on their way out. As they left, they snapped the catches on the final portcullises, ensuring that nobody would be able to enter unless they knew another way in or they had the strength of a hundred elephants. They left on a boat that day, but because of the rush, they sailed into a storm and half of them were lost at sea.
King Idavio Island
To this day, it remains illegal to set foot on this island. To do so would have one exiled from the mainland for fear of Veriviet infiltrating human systems via anybody who encounters the prison. Despite this, countless attempts have been made to penetrate the fortress prison, but none have managed to enter, and most of them got themselves exiled from their countries. It wasn't until several hundred years after they evacuated the prison that rumours of Gabriel being sighted on a nearby island that it also became illegal to set foot on Queen Idavio Island, which is of similar size and situated to the southwest. This island, though considerably more barren than King Idavio, became just as popular and many have ventured there to search for Gabriel, find his keys, or Miesich, or some other valuable artifact, or perhaps even the knowledge and power that many believe Gabriel was bestowed.
