Soulless Warriors
Huskatari is a name give to animated corpses whose form was altered by magic. They were drawn out of the ground by Tobias Edgard, after Sharnan had granted him powerful magical potential. They existed roughly between 1690BD and 1410BD and tormented the people of North Ideitess. Tobias did not go into details about what it meant to animate a dead body, but said that it was like bringing a person back to life but leaving behind their soul. Sharnan forbade Tobias from bringing back anybody he knew, including his mother, or their deal would be off immediately.
Tobias gave each of them the ability to use magic and taught them to use weapons. He did all this within the underground ruins Sharnan called Veriheroth. Apparently, somehow, Veriheroth was once heavily populated by humans, and the buried dead made a large supply of potential Huskatari. Their appearance was also altered by Tobias' magic; they did not look like rotting bodies, but rather like fierce, strong, slightly inhuman warriors designed to intimidate and clad in black and blue. The weapons they were armed with were mostly created by Tobias himself, as he was an experienced earth mage. He could thus reform metals to his liking, and thanks to his direct link, he could do so far beyond the limits of average mages. The magic they were seen using varied from fire to ice; they appeared to be able to cast any type of projectile they desired. What confused the Institute the most was how they were able to cast magic in the first place, as -- according to On Magic -- the energy must pass through the soul of the user to do what the user wishes. They thought that either it was all passing through Tobias' soul or that it wasn't passing through anybody's soul and that it was somehow an accident of practical magic.
Most fallen Huskatari were taken by fellow warriors back to Veriheroth, where Tobias would animate them again and repair their bodies for battle. The most efficient way to kill one was basically to to treat them like painless humans. That is, to not rely on pain to stop them from fighting, but rather, to remove a limb or similar. Most fell when stabbed in the chest and all fell when taking a severe blow to the head, but many continued to fight with one arm and even with one leg. They did not seem to show emotions beyond primal instinct and they did not speak any known language. They did, however, recognise when a person was surrendering, was not a target, or did not mean them any harm. This was thought to be a magical aid supplied by Tobias.
As well as this, numerous immoral mercenaries saw a chance to earn some great rewards, and they spoke with Tobias and were granted the Huskatari title, outfit, weapons, and skills. Admittedly, they felt fear and pain as normal humans do, but they sometimes proved more dangerous than the animated Huskatari because of their cleverness and ability to predict, bargain, think, and speak. Mercenary Huskatari did not use magic. When Sharnan and Tobias died, some of them tried to continue the raids in small groups, but these efforts were quickly extinguished by the Legionites.
