Protectors of the People
During
Phedailin's completion around 3790BD, the population steadily grew as the city did, but five years before the completion of the city, a new order of knights was born in order to protect the people from a threat that had been spotted to the south and west. A hundred or so years later, it was decided that, for the safety of the country, castles should be built around and there should be borders between them and sub-orders of knights.
There are five categories to this order.
Brave Cavalry
Phedailin knights often move and fight on horseback, as horses are common in Phedailin. They clad themselves in often expensive but durable armour, often blue with gold trimmings and crests of gold or silver. Trained to use swords and spears at an early age, they are adapt and disciplined combatants, and are taught to act chivalrously but without endangering themselves. They often patrol the fields of
North Nidonn in small groups of up to half a dozen cavalry, but trouble in the fields is rare. Thanks to the five groups of knights, most of the country is in order and has been for thousands of years.
Stone Armies
The blue-grey Knights of Jevithem are situated in
Jevithem and their focus is on foot soldiers and mass numbers. It was founded by Lord Troy in 3640BD and has held strong ever since. They wear a dull blue and often use spears or swords, though they can use many other weapons. Their higher ranks might ride horses, but they rarely fight on horseback. This is more the style of the Phedailin knights.
Green Fortresses
The green Knights of Leotyne are situated in
Leotyne and their focus is on their mighty fortresses and defensive forms of sword-fighting. It was founded by Landon in 3602BD. Leotyne knights avoid battle where they can, and prefer to sit behind sturdy walls and send spies or infiltrators to scout the lands. They dress themselves in a green and black, though the higher ranks have a more silver-green tint to their outfit.
Golden Archers
The yellow Knights of Trelinia are situated in
Trelinia and their focus is on archers and expensive decoration. It is safe to say that Trelinian's think quite highly of themselves, as their wealth rivals that of Phedailin itself. They were founded by Lord Gabriel in 3570BD. They are often clad in gold with red and show this off quite proudly. They believe archery is the best way to fight because you shouldn't have to even touch your opponent.
Red Generals
The red Knights of Laurondirin are situated in
Laurondirin and their focus is on heavyr armour and skills in all melee weapons. The heavily-armoured knights of the red sand are considered some of the strongest when it comes down to individual strength. They were founded by Lord Daramien in 3534BD. Just as men of Trelinia are solidly built, they train their large horses to wear armour and drag siege weapons. However, they do not consider agility a great aspect of fighting.
Ranks
A member of the Knights of Phedailin can be one of four ranks, all listed below...
Paladin
Limit: Three in each castle. Nine in Phedailin.
Not to be confused with
Paladins, paladins are the best in their field, and there are 21 of them altogether, representing the 21 chains of
Nikina. They are the generals of any other knights who bear the same insignia they do. For example, a paladin of Leotyne can command any soldier bearing the symbol of Leotyne, as it's presumed that he would be a Knight of Leotyne. Paladins follow direct orders of the king and as a whole they have a powerful military voice, but they have little social power compared to the advisors of the kings and lords. Occasionally, all paladins will meet in Phedailin Palace for meetings to discuss any matters at hand. Lords and and the king also attend this.
Knight
Limit: Up to 15 in each province.
Knights are warriors that have shown care of duty and worthiness in battle. A knight often stays in or near the castle, or are assigned to lead any small troop of men if they are going out into another country or far from their home castle. They are highly respected.
Champion
Limit: Around 500 in each province.
Champions are simple soldiers with slightly more say in what they are able to do. Though champions cannot really give commands to a soldier, they are treated somewhat better in regards to what is assigned to them. Nevertheless, champions consider themselves far greater than soldiers.
Soldier
Limit: 1 or 2 million in each province.
Soldiers are basic fighters, having often literally just completed their training. Fortunately, it's uncommon for battles to occur in North Nidonn, so casualties are very rare. Though the number of actual trained soldiers is significantly less, if a lord so pleases, he can order able-bodied men to take up arms to fight in wars for him.
