History

South Riiga is the name for everything to the south of Central, East, and West, and it has never been properly charted or explored and is seldom spoken of. This is due to one reason: Cullashin. Undoubtedly the largest of all intelligent races, they are bipedal weremammoths that roam all of South and guard it fiercely. Their leader and creator is Komulokon, who is also a neutral Hireos. It's believed they have been in South for many thousands of years.

Around the year 3500BD, when the initial reports of mammothmen reached Lyte, scientists laughed at the idea and said the sailors and explorers had either hallucinated or severely exaggerated an attack by bears or the like. A few years later, suspicious adventurers sailed down to South to find out for themselves, and just like the previous humans, they were encountered by giant weremammoths upon setting foot in the snow. After a suspenseful scramble back to their ships, the adventurers got away. When they came back to Central they were very frightened and exhausted. The stories they carried back with them were told many times to many people and soon everyone knew about the weremammoths before scientists had time to try and douse the stories. In later years, proof that Cullashin existed had been found and people stopped denying their existence. The name "Cullashin" comes from the one phrase weremammoths speak. One adventurer recalled that the largest of the beasts was saying, "We are Cullashin," over and over in a very powerful voice.

Around the year 1000BD, groups of hunters were gathering with ships to try and capture some Cullashin and sell their hide and tusks in markets, thinking they would become rich. Though the hunters were very experienced and their weapons were excellent, they never returned from their journey and their boats were never found. It is believed they were all killed by Cullashin. After that event, only the very foolish went to try and hunt Cullashin, and nobody who went to do so ever returned.

Over time, it was the sailors who remembered the beasts. Common people forgot about them and presently hardly anybody knows what they are. Still, the South is never explored. Everyone fears Cullashin too much and people do not care if those large islands are only partially mapped. The risk of being shipwrecked by a swimming Cullashin or by being trampled and mauled by those on the land strikes fear into anyone with just a spark of sense.

Appearance and Nature

A Cullashin has over thrice the stature of a human man and can wield axes, clubs, and bows as thick as trees. They are coated completely in very thick fur that protects them from the extreme coldness of South and also clad themselves in primitive plates of armour, placed strategically around their bodies. Their clothing is just as primitive and are used for protection and for displaying superiority. The largest Cullashin can have up to six tusks and they use them as weapons, attaching bands of spines or lumps of metal to them.

The main thing that's known of the Cullashin's nature is their ferociousness in defending their territory and their ruthlessness towards humans. They make noises much like elephants do, only deeper and longer, and much more eerie. They travel in large herds with the larger ones standing on the flanks to protect the smaller ones and the females from harsh wind. They don't repair their weapons; if a weapon is broken, they simply go and make another one from whatever is nearby. They do not take shelter from storms. They simply sleep where they are if they have to sleep. It's been speculated that they have a language, too.
