Batyrun, Land of Mountain Forts
In the northeastern corner of North Tasif, bordering Temanea via the Filce Canyon, is a rugged, wild, and expansive province known as Batyrun. Around North Tasif, it is known commonly as the mountains, or sometimes more formally known as the hiams, which is the old Vastin word for mountains. Travellers from Lyte first wandered into the huge valley of Batyrun around 12,920BD from the north.
Batyrun has two mountain ranges running through it. To the west is the Nor Vastin range and to the east are the Tervastin Mountains. The latter range has two rivers -- the Rennen and the Terfilce -- running from its slopes. Greater Tyrisen and Lesser Tyrisen are two northern lakes. The first settlers from Lyte first camped in the open forests around these lakes, but the Gutreea Woods to the northwest proved to be too dangerous, and so they fled south through the valley. The Ruganoin river marks the southern border of Batyrun.
Batyrun is known for its bountiful stone quarries. There, countless generations of miners have hauled fine stone all over the country for the construction of fortresses, towers, and walls. Even Batyrun's two cities, Rugana and Cecedul, boast ancient fortresses of their own.
Rugana
Rugana is Batyrun's largest city. It is old and quite large, and it is found on the banks of the Ruganoin river. Its southern bridge is one of the main entries from anywhere to the east to get into Meloe, making Rugana a highly visited town. As such, it has extensive trading markets and many shops and stores. In the middle of the city is a hill, and on that hill is an old fortress which was once a mighty outpost for the White Order. The fortress is known as Ansaria Fort, and it acted as a primary defence for the south, as it guarded the only way across the Ruganoin.
Rygeria
The city surrounding Ansaria Fort is actually significantly younger than the fort itself. A city called Rygeria was originally built around the fortress. This city was founded in 6474BD. It lasted only 2000 years, because a vicious earthquake in 4488BD brought most of the city to the ground -- just like what happened to Cece Vastin in 9006BD. The city was rebuilt and completed in 4313BD. This new city was named Rugana. Though only a shadow compared to Rygeria's original glory and success, Rugana became Batyrun's new city. Only a few protected buildings from Rygeria still stand, though Ansaria withstood the earthquake with great fortitude.
Cecedul
A small city tucked away deep in Nor Vastin. Cecedul is in fact the highest town in Central, and as such, its outpost is the highest in Central. This outpost is called Cece Vastin and it dates back to at least 12,905BD. Though it was partially destroyed by a violent earthquake around 9006BD, most of the outpost is original material. Like Ansaria Fort, it is one of many White Order remnants littered all over Tasif.
Fort Tyrisen
One of the oldest and most famous fortress ruins in Tasif, Fort Tyrisen inspires fear and wonder in all who hear of it. It was originally built to be a more northern version of Ansaria Fort in Rugana to the south, but some advances in fortress-building meant that Fort Tyrisen could be even larger, greater, and more impressive. It was completed in the year 12,565BD and over the following few hundred years, it impended many monster raids coming from the north. As seems to be the curse in Batyrun, an earthquake struck the fortress in 11,608BD, and most of its foundation was crushed. Half the structure crumbled and the other half remained erect. Since the foundations were so damaged, repairs would be immensely expensive and time-consuming, so the people left the fortress alone.
