North Nidonn, The Great Kingdom

North Nidonn is the central country of the largest continent in the East. It boasts five provinces, each with their own culture, and each ruled by their own lord and castle. All five lords answer to the king who resides in a palace in the city of Duracia. Also in this city is one of the most famous temples, Hunnuklad, where Nikina himself appears.

History of the Great Kingdom

In the year 3809BD, humans from Central set out toward the east to discover new lands. This band consisted of many adventurers, swarms of large families, some men of trade, but no people with divine blood or Hireos. They came across a country now known as Nidonn and came ashore at the western end of what is now Leotyne. The few thousand or so travellers trekked east across the rocky plains, came into a large valley with a giant lake, and eventually headed south -- all over the course of seven years. Along the way, they set up many camps and tried to found settlements, but they did not work out for numerous reasons.

In 3802, when hope was a mere sliver, scouts saw a structure and everyone gathered around it. This structure was one of the four temples known as Hunnuklad, and a high priest known as Father Duosol encouraged everyone to take shelter in it. Indeed, Hunnuklad was both a temple and a sanctuary from harm. The sturdy reddish-brown building contained many rooms of all kinds, though most were empty. Like all temples, the doorways and corridors were quite large, as though something twice as big as a man once resided there. It wasn't long before Nikina himself came to Duosol in one of the more ambiguous rooms of the temple. Nikina told the high priest to tell everyone else to build a city, and Nikina would grant whoever they chose as their king an extended life. Ecstatic, Duosol passed on what he had heard to the residents of the temple, and they set out immediately to build a large city around this temple. Nikina guided the workers to the best sources of stone, wood, metal, soil for crops, and fresh water, and by the next year, the formations of the city had been laid, and this place was named Phedailin.

Now, Phedailin remains more or less as it had been when it was completed in 3790BD, 11 years later. It is a city of pale stone surrounded by high walls, three gates to the north, east, and south, and a grand palace at the western edge of the city that housed the chosen king, his family, and his subjects. The population steadily grew as the city did, but five years before the completion of the city, a new order of knights was born in order to protect the people from a threat that had been spotted to the south and west. The Knights of Phedailin were a disciplined order of strong knights clad in blue and gold. A hundred or so years later, it was decided that, for the safety of the country, castles should be built around and there should be borders and sub-orders of knights. Also, another order was created to protect the temple itself and this order also consisted of priests and skilled guards. Duosol led this order, known as the Order of Dualkedor.

And so it was that in 3649BD, Jevithem Castle -- city of grey soldiers -- was founded in the valley with the great baymoor lake. In 3608BD, another family went back to the rocky area they first came to all those years ago, and atop a plateau they founded Leotyne Castle -- city of green defense. In 3575BD, a third family travelled north of Jevithem and settled in another valley by the sea, with a forest at the western end. In this place they started Trelinia Castle (not to be confused with Trelinia in the west) -- city of golden arrows. In 3543BD, a fourth and final family went past Jevithem, past Trelinia, and north through a steep mountain path to come to a land of red sand that met the sea at its northern end. In this vast field they started Laurondirin Castle -- city of red armour. Nobody ever ventured far south, for that was where the Karithians lived.

The Land

The five provinces of North Nidonn are Phedailin, Jevithem, Leotyne, Trelinia, Laurondirin, and more specific descriptions of each region can be read on the respective articles. Belynsia was once a province, but it is now a ruinous wasteland, and it's now referred to as Old Belynsia.

North Nidonn consists of the following map sections: 06, 07, 08, N7, N8, and the eastern ends of M7 and M8. On the one continent, there are the pirates to the north, and Karithians to the southwest. North Nidonn is mostly rocky fields and hills surrounded by tall peaks. There are a large number of valleys carving through the mountain ranges that separate most of the kingdoms. North of Leotyne Castle stands Mount Linhill, a place Leotyne sends their best soliders for special training. The roots of this mountain spread south, trailing all over Leotyne and making up their rugged and defensive country's terrain. This area is also full of caves and tunnels, some of which are rumoured to lead into the castle itself. Just west of Yele is another tall mountain, known as Yele Heights. Also around this area there are many mineral mines, especially around Yele, where they do the most mining. There are mines in east Laurondirin, and gold mines west Trelinia. Trelinia has a thick forest called Woodridge in the western end where its archers hunt and practice. They are not dangerous woods, but the further west one heads into them, the more careful one must be of archers doing training.

Cape Road is the main road in North Nidonn, and it starts at Phedailin. From there it heads east and then north into Jevithem where it curves around the great Lake Baymoor. Smaller roads break off and lead east, west, and north to Jevithem Castle, Leotyne, and Trelinia, respectively. When Cape Road reaches the mountains at the eastern end of Jevithem, it goes through a settlement called Cape Crossing, and it then heads up through a large valley and then there is a fork. One path heads south to the remote town of Yele. The other road heads straight north to Laurondirin. It ends at Laurondirin Castle.

Lightstorms are a weather phenomenon found only in North Nidonn, mostly near Hunnuklad. They are best described as a lightning storm without rain or lightning. Thick clouds explode with lightning-like light but there is no electricity or damage. Lightstorms are often accompanied by strong winds, which may cause some damage, but the light is known to be harmless, and many actually take time to observe and admire lightstorms. They are seen as good omens or blessings from Nikina.

Politics and Authority

North Nidonn is governed by a single king or monarch residing in the palace of Duracia. Thus, the kingdom is a monarchy. This king is seen as the top authority figure everywhere. Directly beneath the king (though higher in the eyes of some) is the High Priest of Hunnuklad. Beneath the High Priest is the lord of Phedailin, and beneath him are the other lords. From there come the paladins, and from that point onwards, hierarchy branches off into the individual provinces. The king has rule over all kingdoms, and tends to concentrate on matters dealing with this area, whereas the lord of Phedailin concentrates on matters within the province. The same applies to the other lords: they each set their attention to what is going on within their own lands. The High Priest tends to have more power when the matter is religious or if it requires some astounding insight, as the High Priest is said to speak daily with Nikina.

Though a king and lord is enlisted with more authority then their queen or lady, the females often gain just as much fame from the people. In the absense of the lord, the lady rules, and not the prince. The higher rankings are generally respected. Ruling figures of North Nidonn are thought of as wise more often than foolish, though there are indeed some figures that most commoners would rather forget about. When a king passes away, his son takes his place. If he has no son, his place is taken by the lord of Phedailin, and the lord's son -- the prince -- becomes the new lord. If, for some reason, there is no lord or prince and the king has no sons, the people elect a lord from one of the other provinces to take the place of the king. This has never happened, though.

Despite the king having authority over North Nidonn, wars have still broken out in the past. Usually, it is caused by espionage and spies; one kingdom wanting to always know what another kingdom is doing. Conflicting provinces are normally quick to seek the aid of Phedailin, as whoever gets there first usually has Phedailin on their side. The only two provinces to have actually fought against Phedailin's armies in the past are Trelinia and Laurondirin. Neither of them made any victories against Phedailin.

Kings and Lords

The people of Northern Nidonn did not keep good track of the leaders of their earlier days. Though the lords of the four other castles were also granted a longer life by Nikina, lords and kings came and went over the years, and only recently did they document their past and current leaders more accurately. Of all past Kings, only Harha, Devante, and Tahariel were human. The rest were Hireos, but citizens rarely knew such information.

Son of Erertoga and father of Enos, Sigmund is the first neutral Hireos king of Phedailin in North Nidonn. Of course, the son of the king is the highest prioritised heir to the throne, and the only reason there was no uprising against Sigmund being crowned a neutral king of a Nikina-worshiping kingdom was because nobody knew. Nikina promised to extend the life of any of their kings, so commoners had no reason to believe they were anything other than divinely chosen humans descended from King Harha. The High Priest and king have different roles in Phedailin, anyway. As the King has little control over the High Priest (though he is the only one who has any power over the High Priest), the king does not associate in religious affairs, normally.
