The Climate

The world of Riiga has biomes and climates quite similar to those on earth. Below is a map, a key to the climates, and a brief description of each one along with example pictures. Most of it is quite rough, and some places are mostly guessed as humans have scarcely visited it.

Polar
Extreme cold

Polar regions are very cold. They're characterised by heavy winds, low rainfall and snowfall, no vegetation, and deep frozen soil.

Mountainous
Extreme cold to cold

At lower levels, mountains support vegetation, but above cloud level, temperature drops and rainfull increases.

Tundra
Very cold

These cold, treeless deserts support very few plants larger than shrubs, because of the cold and lack of nutrients.

Coniferous
Cold

In coniferous areas, summers are short and winters are long, and there are usually thick forests of conifer trees.

Temperate
Cool/pleasant

Temperate climates have distinct warm and cool seasons, and it has lots of rainfall and large trees. Despite this, winters are still fierce.

Open Forest
Warm/pleasant

An open forest is on the warm side. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are mild. It covers many coastal regions.

Grassland
Dry

Grasslands are generally dry environments which ares screened from moist sea breezes by mountains, and thus do not sustain many trees well.

Desert
Very hot

Very low rainfall and very high surface temperatures are distinct features of deserts. Only water-storing plants survive here.

Subtropical
Warm

Hot weather and heavy rainfall seasons describe subtropical environments well. Though they can be forested, there are also subtropical grasslands.

Tropical
Hot

Tropical environments get even more rainfall and are even hotter than subtropical areas. Vegetation is lush and moist and dense rainforests usually grow here.
