Technologies of Riiga

Riiga can best be described as a pre-industrial world. Things like steampower and electricty are actually illegal in all human areas, thanks to Sage Carson. He had them outlawed while he was alive and the laws have stuck ever since.

Carson's Law

Carson was an avid inventor among many other things. Late in his research, (around 5000BD, it's believed) he discovered the heat engine, and then the steam engine. Though he delved deep into its possibilities, he quickly grew tired of it and turned his interestes towards something else. He then moved on to studying what's known as thunder magic; spefically electric charges. It's not known how, but he created an electrostatic generator. Because he kept so many of his studies to himself, it can't be told what he discovered and created unless he wanted anybody to know. What people do know, though, is that he soon went to King Forfax and proposed these things called "steampower" and "electricity" to be illegal, and extremely punishable. After an extensive explanation of the technologies and the dangers he believed they would lead to, the king agreed.

King Forfax instructed every soldier to be cautious of any suspicious machinery, and if they were to be found guilty of creating something that matched the description of Carson's Law, it was to be destroyed. If such an instance occured again with the same person, they would be imprisoned. Forfax believed strongly that Carson was a man of amazing insight, which is mainly why he believed that, if Carson saw something as a potential threat, it was truly a threat.

It wasn't long before Central, South Ideitess, and East were notified of Carson's Law, and Carson wrote extensive letters to the leaders there detailing the threat of short-sighted inventors creating potentially dangerous machines, how to destroy such machines, and recommended punishments. "Such a machine will bring far more pain than it will aid us," Carson wrote in his letters. "We have all the technologies we need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Let us not fall into the traps of overinvention." Carson had created such a good argument, that Carson's Law was instilled throughout all human areas under rule of any kings or emperors. The law has stuck ever since.

Carson was a firm believer in knowing when to stop what you're doing and go back the other way, and he was never afraid to let others know when they were doing the same thing.
