Sciences of Riiga
Though Riiga is considered a preindustrial world, science still exists. Below, there are brief explanations on the advancements that Riigan humans have made in regards to the primary scientific areas.
Alchemy
Alchemy is perhaps the rarest science in Riiga. It is related to herbology because the ingredients used are usually plants. Nikolas Carson invented alchemy, but the only living alchemist is Jaron Carson. Alchemy predominantly involves the creation of chemicals through manipulating and combining natural products, such as plants, minerals, parts of animals, and more. These chemicals are then made into drinkable potions and sold to whoever is interested. They generally enhance the body's functions or cure diseases or illnesses, but some potions have been designed to cause pain and even kill people. Because it is such a complex and secret science, none have been able to find out how it is done. Jaron Carson is the richest man in Central because the secret of alchemy is so well-kept.
Astronomy
Though there are people who call themselves astronomers in Riiga, it is not a popular science, nor is it highly developed. Astronomers do little more than try to map out the night sky through the aid of their primitive telescopes. Because telescopes are such expensive and rare items, astronomy is simply a hobby for bored and rich people.
Biology
Biological understanding in Riiga is advanced, but because nobody has invented the microscope, their research is limited to what they can see with the naked eye (though magnifying glasses are often used). Botany and zoology are common school subjects, but their understanding of cells and molecules is more or less nothing.
Geology
Geology is often an overlooked area of science in Riiga. There is very little understanding of how rocks and gemstones are formed, and of what lies beneath the surface of Riiga's crust. Despite this, metallurgy has been a favourite area of study for Riigans for a very long time. This is most likely due to the abundance of armour and weapons.
Mathematics
Maths is, of course, a common area of science, but if a Riigan does not need a mathematic formula for a thing, then they will not create one. Using numbers in arithmetic and counting or measuring things like time is something that most Riigans would learn in school. Besides geometry, there is little more to it.
Medicine
Medicine is one of the more advanced sciences of Riiga. Areas such as herbalism, anatomy, immunology, nutrition, physiology, and toxicology are perhaps the most commonly known branches of human medicine in Riiga. There are two types of healers in Riiga: doctors, who use medicinal science; and magic healers, who use light magic. Neither area of healing are seen as superior to the other.
Physics
Physics is common on a basic level. Mechanics are prevalent. There is clockwork machinery in rich homes, and there are cranes and other construction equipment which use pulley systems, gears, and levers. Carson experimented with thermodynamics and electromagnetism through his ventures into steam engines and electrostatic generators, but has since outlawed it. See Carson's Law for more information.
